MIDLAND, Texas – Texas sophomore Colin Markes completed an unblemished run through the singles draw and claimed the men’s singles title Sunday at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational. Markes gives UT its second consecutive singles title in the event after current UT sophomoreHarrison Scott won the event a year ago.
Markes opened the third day of competition with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win over Auburn’s Olle Thestrup in the semifinals to earn his way into the singles final. Markes dropped the first set to Ferran Calvo of Tyler Junior College in the final, but the Austin native put away the second and third sets by 6-4 margins to nail down his tournament title.
Texas added four singles victories at the Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic in St. Helena, California. Scott held off Baylor’s Bjoern Petersen by a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 count, and UT freshman Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard posted singles wins over non-collegiate opponents.
Sigsgaard, by way of his performances on Friday and Saturday, earned a berth in the tournament’s afternoon shootout round. The newcomer from Denmark defeated USC’s Logan Smith in the quarterfinals, 10-7 before falling to Tulsa’s Dominic Bechard in the semifinals, 10-8.
Texas resumes fall tournament play next weekend at the Cajun Tennis Classic in Lafayette, Louisiana.
